Great Ocean Walk — Day 7

Route: Devils Kitchen — Twelve Apostles — Port Campbell

I was glad it was the final day on the trail, it was really a lot colder at night that I would have liked. My equipment was simply too light for conditions like that. I was also pretty tired from the long walk the previous day.

Route: Johanna Beach — Ryans Den — Devils Kitchen

It was my 30th birthday and I thought about skipping the Ryans Den campsite and walk two day sections in one day. The reasons were simply that my gas can was about to run empty and it got so cold at night that I was keen to shorten up the trip if possible.

Great Ocean Walk — Day 5

Route: Aire River — Johanna Beach

It was very calm in the morning. I got up early — I didn’t know what time it was but I had heard campers on the other campsite talking, so I assumed it was time to get up. It was still dark, probably around 7am.

Great Ocean Walk — Day 4

I woke up during the night. Some animal had made noise inside the shelter where my tent was, so I got up and moved all my clothes, that I had hung up for drying, inside the tent.

Great Ocean Walk — Day 3

I woke up pretty early and decided to get up and watch the sunrise over Blanket Bay. It was very cold inside my tent again and I thought by walking around outside there would be a greater chance to get warm.

Great Ocean Walk — Day 2

Route: Elliot Ridge - Blanket Bay

It was a very cold night, I had trouble staying warm in my sleeping bag. However all pain was gone when I woke up to the laughter of a bunch of Kookaburras near the campsite. They always make me smile.

Great Ocean Walk — Day 1

Route: Apollo Bay - Elliot Ridge

On a Sunday morning I boarded the Vline bus from Geelong to Apollo Bay, after a great weekend in Geelong with Frank & Sue and their kids. It was raining all the way down to Apollo Bay.

Back from the Great Ocean Walk

On Saturday I finished the Great Ocean Walk, and I’m very impressed. I had a good week on the track, almost no rain and there were a lot of things I loved about this walk, especially compared to the walks I did in Tasmania.

On the way to the Great Ocean Walk

I’m on the bus to Apollo Bay from where I will walk the Great Ocean Walk for the next 8 days.

The second part of my week in Melbourne was quite nice, I went to see the impressive National Gallery of Victoria, I went to the Melbourne Cricket Ground with my mate Frank to see AFL Hawthorn vs Cats, and I also organised a new phone and switched from Optus to Telstra, following constant call drops and data connection issues. With the new phone and better network I can now go online with my MacBook anytime using the data connection of my phone which is very nice. I also talked to some recruiters who had contacted me. Melbourne is such a great place, I can imagine living there, but I want to see some more of the country first.

After a great week in Melbourne I took the train to Geelong on Friday and spent the week with Frank and his awesome family. I organised food supplies for the walk and on Friday we went to a royal wedding party which was actually a lot of fun, people were great.

In Apollo Bay I will have lunch and then walk the first part. At the moment it is a bit rainy but nothing too bad. The weather forecast looked promising. I’m really looking forward to seeing wild koalas.
