In 2008 I moved from Germany to Australia, the best decision of my life. On this blog you can find stories and photos about hiking in Tasmania and on the mainland, travelling, and life in Australia — my journey from Working Holiday to Permanent Residency.

I had a very bad sleep, I never sleep well on camping trips, I simply don’t like my sleeping mattress and need a good pillow. After the Overland Track I decided to buy a pillow case to fill it with clothes and use it as a pillow but it was still uncomfortable.

The first day started pretty early, at 4am! I got up early to prepare my backpack and stuff, and at 4.30am Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona was on tv/web. Unfortunately the match ended in an utterly devastating 4:0 for Barcelona, so my start in the day could have been better. At least I didn’t need to worry about missing the re-match one week later.

A few weeks ago on Easter I was walking the South Coast Track in Tasmania’s South West National Park. Compared to my previous long hike - the Overland Track - this track is more challenging, there are no huts along the track, it is more remote with less visitors and rangers around and the track usually tends to be very muddy.
Today I returned from the South Coast Track. I was really looking forward to coming home. I had a great week but the walk has also been quite frustrating at times, there’s a lot to tell and I will work on a complete diary with hundred of photos, it should be ready within the next ten days hopefully.
I’m still planning with seven days, but I calculate with three spare days in case of weather changes, flood or whatever else. The Overland Track and the Freycinet Peninsula Walk have been welcome field studies for my equipment and multi-day hiking preparations. For the South Coast Track I need to be more professional. It is now autumn in Tasmania, snowfall in higher regions is normal. Thankfully I will walk around sealevel most of the time, so I don’t expect snow except maybe on the Ironbounds. But what I can expect is a lot of rain and cold wind. The days will be shorter and there will be less people around.

The next big adventure is only 10 days away! Last week I thought about walking the South Coast Track. I did some planning, some research and some calculating and in the end I made the decision to do it. It’s a 5-8 day walk around the southern coast of Tasmania’s South West National Park. The walk is one of the more popular ones, but around Easter I don’t expect many people there since the season is almost over and weather in Tasmania is starting to become unreliable (has it ever been reliable?).
Yesterday I looked at a calendar and noticed we have a long Easter weekend upcoming. Then I thought if I take one or two additional leave days, I could probably go hiking for a whole week. But where? I didn’t have any plans to go hiking anytime soon because I didn’t expect to have time. And I was saving money for a small home server… suddenly this Easter thing appears ‘out of the blue’ and I need to make a plan.
