    My new website

    Some time ago I mentioned I was working on a portfolio website. As a developer it’s good to have a portfolio site where you can show what you’ve worked on and what you’re capable of. And I also wanted to have a place where I can blog about tech stuff, since as a developer you discover all sorts of interesting stuff every day, you use the latest technology and you develop solutions that others might find useful too. If I post that here you would be annoyed, cross-topic ‘this-is-my-opinion’ blogs suck.

    So here it is. From now on this will serve as my place to introduce projects and publish all sorts of stuff that has nothing to do with traveling or life in Australia. And there will be a lot of exciting stuff in the coming weeks.

    New design and functionality

    You may have noticed it, the new design is here. Everything is now updated and seems to be working, most bugs are probably fixed, if you still encounter any please tell me. I love the new design, since July I have been working on it but it’s far more than just a new outfit. Most changes have happened behind the scenes.

    Change is coming

    Not only to the United States, to this website as well! Since August I’ve been working on a complete rework of this blog and a launch this weekend seems possible. I made huge progress in the last 3 weeks and the changes will be massive. You can look forward to a new design and new functionality, some parts like the picture gallery will get a complete rework. The new website will allow me to post more pictures, posting will be easier for me especially from my iPhone (the current design has some limitations), so you can expect a lot more posts with a lot more pictures, simply because it will be less complicated and thus more fun to me. I also plan to buy a new camera soon and bought a wonderful book titled ‘100 walks in Tasmania’ today. I hope I can do as many of these walks as possible, but I don’t want to head off without a proper camera, I need to get a new one this month, definitly.

    Finally: iPhone arrived

    Yesterday I finally got my long-awaited iPhone. And it’s a contract phone, goodbye pre-paid! After providing a pile of ID’s and bankaccount statements they let me sign up for a 2-year contract. I didn’t need to pay any upfront cost and only pay around 40 Euro per month, which gives me 1 GB of data and more than $500 of phone/text credit per month. It means every month I can send about 2000 text messages without additional costs ;-). 1 GB data should be enough too, I can use the wireless network in my office 5 days a week, so it will be hard to exceed it. I haven’t discovered all the features yet, but I really like it, well done Apple.

    Hobart, I’m back!

    Good news everyone! I got a new job in Hobart at an international company that sells tourism products in Australia and Canada. From this week on I am the new Senior Web Developer and responsible for about 15 existing websites, for design, further development, optimisation and the creation of new websites. It’s a full time job with an amazing perspective, they want to keep me as long as possible and even offered me an employer sponsorship to get a permanent resident visa.

    Gadget weeks

    And now for something completely different: when I’m not in the forests I usually spend a lot of time with my MacBook. When people ask me what I’m actually doing I always say “computer work”. To prove that this is true and I’m not just wasting my time on facebook (like many others): check out the new website of my mothers business, I created a new design and included some nice functionality. Hard to believe this is realised with Wordpress once again, but it is becoming a really powerful backend for small websites if you know how to use it.

    Neues Outfit

    Die Grape season ist in Tasmanien vorbei und auf Kartoffeln ernten hatte ich keine große Lust (ziemlich dreckige Arbeit), dadurch bin ich seit ein paar Tagen quasi arbeitslos und konnte mich mal wieder was anderem widmen. Ich hab dem Blog deshalb einfach mal ein neues Outfit spendiert, das alte hat mir von Anfang an nicht besonders gut gefallen. Das neue gefällt mir deutlich besser und ich bin froh, mein Laptop jetzt nach tagelanger Arbeit wieder weglegen zu können. Ich glaube in so kurzer Zeit habe ich noch nie ein komplettes Wordpress-Design fertig gemacht.
