DOCV Tassie Tiger Hunt

3,000km motorcycle tour around Tasmania

In February I joined about 40 others from the Ducati Owners Club Victoria for the biennial (I think) Tassie Tiger Hunt, a bike tour all around Tasmania.

It was exceptionally well organised and covered pretty much every part of the state, navigating some of the finest motorcycling roads in the country. Every night we had great accomodation and lunch stops, booked well in advance. I ended up riding just under 3,000km in the 10 days on the trip.

The week before departure I brought in the Hyperstrada for its 30,000km desmo service, so I could enjoy the ride with a bike in perfect condition with new tyres, chain, belts, oil and filters.

I decided to get rid of the Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tyres and try the more sporty Continental Road Attack 3. It ended up being a superb choice, the Hyperstrada was absolutely flying over the winding Tasmanian roads, I never felt so much confidence in high-speed corners before, thanks to the sticky tyres. For the first time I was able to ride the rear tyre all the way to the edge and never felt like I was anywhere close to the limit.

Over the course of the trip several riders were having issues with tyre punctures (some multiple times), sometimes caused by sharp bone fragments from road kill. We even had one major accident (caused by luggage failure – rider ok) but personally I was lucky to get through the trip without any incidents and had an absolute blast.

Overall it was a fantastic ride in the greatest possible company. It’s such a great experience to ride around Tasmania with a bike club like DOCV. I feel like my riding skills improved a lot just from following other riders. Sometimes I picked a slightly faster, more experienced rider on a windy section like the spectacular Maydena-Strathgordon road, then stayed close behind and watched their cornering and breaking technique, it makes such a difference for a relatively new rider like me.

Looking forward to the next Tiger Hunt!
